Diets low in carbohydrates: not just for weight loss?

Some people swear by low carbohydrate diets, claiming that while losing weight, they are better able to control their hunger and nibbling, and continue to enjoy endless quantities of foods such as bacon, butter and avocados. . Others report lower energy levels by avoiding carbohydrates and argue that eating a lot of fat is disastrous for heart health.
However, new scientific research has shown that patients with type 1 diabetes can improve their glycemic control by following a very low carbohydrate diet. 
Reported in the journal Pediatrics, participants who consumed an average of 36 grams of carbohydrate a day (about 5% of total daily calories) reported blood sugar levels closer to normal levels. They also reported that they needed less insulin than usual, and that they had better measures of insulin sensitivity.

The controversy of carbohydrates

But before throwing away your bread and rice and replacing them with lard and boiled chicken, consider this: not all carbs are necessarily bad.
In fact, it is well known that carbohydrates are the most efficient energy source, and that without them, your training, your recovery and your muscle growth could be called into question. Replenishing the glycogen stores in your muscles after a hard workout is especially important to prevent the breakdown of amino acids in the muscles and accelerate the synthesis of muscle proteins.
However, eating high-sugar, high-glycemic foods (often called "impact carbohydrates") at the wrong time can make your diet uncontrollable, with cravings that are difficult to control. Not to mention all the excess calories that sweet foods bring.

Now, we are not saying that diets low in carbohydrates or ketogenic have no place. In fact, anecdotal and scientific evidence suggests that this might be a good choice for some. We have been eating carbohydrates for centuries with very few problems so far, and the majority of serious athletes swear by them. Our advice? Avoid sugary foods and choose foods with low impact carbohydrates to keep your blood sugar under control.
